"The writer should never be ashamed of staring. There is nothing that does not require his attention." - Flannery O'Connor
The Playwriting Workshop Class sessions are conducted by two well-established NY playwrights: published Broadway playwright Jeremy Kareken who teaches writing at NYU and who is also an actor as well as a writer, and Edward Einhorn, playwright, director, translator, librettist, theater journalist, and novelist. In addition to their teaching the Playwriting workshop classes both Mr. Kareken and Mr. Einhorn, also monitor their respective monthly sessions of Chelsea Rep's Playwriting LAB under the auspices of Chelsea Repertory Company. The Playwriting LAB is held the second Saturday of each month where both current and former playwriting students are able to submit and hear their selected work read in directed readings featuring actors and directors from the Studio alumni.
This class is a concentrated introduction to Sanford Meisner's approach to developing basic acting skills following a step-by-step progression of exercises that develop the actor's ability to live organically moment by moment under imaginary circumstances. This acting class covers the beginning Meisner techniques from word repetition through their first application to a scene and serves as a studio audition for people new to acting. It is by far the best beginner acting class in New York City. It is a pre-requisite for admission to The Acting Program. Requires outside practice with a partner twice a week.

When writing for actors, one needs to understand the methods actors use to bring a playwright's words to life. In this class the student will learn the subtle techniques characters use to influence each other - and how to make situations exciting and filled with tension. Very few actors know what to do with their script beyond just memorizing their lines. While knowing your lines is important, it is only about 5% of the work an actor needs to do. This class focuses on the other 95% of the actors work in regard to understanding how to analyze the text, and make acting choices which become the foundation of their performance.
